About Cockapoos  and Birdwalk Puppies

A little about cockapoos in general for the curious: They are of course, a cross between the poodle and the cocker spaniel thus the name cock a poo. They generally pick up the non shedding hair of the poodle with out being so tightly curled, along with the low doggy odor of the poodle.  Both sides contribute intelligence. They are especially well suited for a family companion as they tolerate the indiscretions/roughness of small children while making a playful loving friend for the rest of the family. They are wonderful for people with allergies as they do  not have the normal undercoat of many breeds ( this is what most allergies are to) They acquire some sturdiness from the cocker. and being a hybrid - hybrid vigor. The poodle factor and hybrid vigor combine to create a nice longevity.

All Birdwalk pups are born and raised in the home. Puppies are handled every day and socialized to other dogs (and also learn that the cat is boss). Puppies are provided with multifaceted stimulation from the time their eyes open after birth. Toys are provided as soon as the puppies have gained a sense of their surroundings and play is encouraged. We like to know what environment a pup will be going into as well as what will be expected of it. As we watch emerging personalities and to temperament testing we can help guide you to choosing which pup will fit in best as your new family member. All puppies will have at least two rounds of vaccinations  (including distemper, hepatitis, adenovirus, leptospirosis, parainfluenza, parvovirus, corona virus and bordatella) before leaving for their new homes and families as well as being started on monthly heartworm protection.

Microchip identification is available and highly recommended (a nominal charge of $20). Microchipping provides permanent ID for your pet, and can also the the deciding factor in proving ownership should your pet become lost or stolen and someone else attempts to claim it as theirs. Should your dog become lost microchipping provides the best chance of return since the registration information is added to a national database, and most vets and shelters in the country now as a matter of course scan for a chip when a stray dog is brought to them. It involves no more than an injection similar to a vaccination in the area between the shoulder blades of the pup, and is an invaluable link matching your pet to you.

Puppies are acclimated to a crates and will have spent some time (a few hours per day) alone in a crate prior to leaving the farm in order to ease the transition from their mom to their new homes, and to also begin crate training as the first step in house training. We start puppies on newspapers here and you can easily progress to outside potty training from there.

Cockapoos require little but brushing every week. However, they may be groomed like a poodle having their faces shaved or left with a mustache, cleaned on top like a cocker or left au naturale. Many faux cuts are possible too. Most people just keep the hair to a manageable length while cleaning around the eyes and under the tail for obvious reasons.

Cockapoos do well indoors or out although they live to be with their people. They will be fine outside when they cannot be with you. With a good dog house and a shade tree they do fine, or with a doggy door.  In the winter ours go play in the pond and come back covered in ice crystals and don't seem to be cold for their play, although I will not leave them out in severely cold weather despite what they want. I have one who will sleep on top her dog house to wake up covered in snow, not 20 feet from the doggy door into the house and the warmth of the fireplace.

If you plan to own a cockapoo plan a toy budget. I recommend latex squeaky toys over vinyl for stretchability and durability. Lambswool stuffed toys are a favorite around here. Knotted rawhide bones but never chipped glued together ones ( I have had sharp chips cut their mouths) no little rawhide sticks ( they chew one end until it's soft and try to swallow it (choking hazard). No toys or balls with bells or eyes that could be swallowed. And finally, a damp frozen washcloth is great for those teething weeks (16 weeks to six months). I highly recommend obedience training, be it a book from the library or that you join the local dog club, or classes that are offered by many larger pet stores. It is nice to know that you can call "fido" away from the road and danger if needed. I will also recommend a crate for house training as the pup will not want to mess in his/her private den.  When you are at work you know your pup is not home chewing electrical wires, and when you come home you go outside on a good note ( not having to correct any indiscretions).

We have placed cockapoos with people doing the agility circuit, one with Universal Studios to be a movie star. Our dogs perform on stage every summer. But, most important of all we have placed dogs with FAMILIES.It is to note that many breeders have been acquiring  breeding stock from us in an attempt to improve their breeding stock, as we select only the best in conformation and temperament. In addition we are strong proponents of genetic testing;  ALL our breeding stock must past genetic screening of OFA   and Cerf (Cerf is a continuing evaluation,  not a one-time check) in addition to temperament testing before we will breed them.  While we encourage other breeders to do the same many do not. Unfortunately the problem comes in when they do not keep up this standard or breed to untested dogs, not considering that 1/2 the pup resulting will have not adhered to this high standard.  This may be fine - however without the 'proof' it is creating more of a gamble for the buyer.

In regard to rearing and shipping, we ship at 8 weeks of age (sometimes later if we feel a certain individual is not socially ready to go). At about 5 weeks we take mom away for part of the day to start getting the pups weaned and mom's milk drying up. At 6 weeks we take mom away during the day except for play sessions to finish weaning the pups and get them used to doing things on their own. They get a few hours a day to explore the living room and experience multiple stimuli. We encourage them to use newspapers and puppy pee pads at this time. By 7 weeks old  we take mom away at night and back for play session during the day, plus we break them into smaller groups and mix litters if we have more than one litter so the pups experience other pups as well as getting to play with non-mom adults. Weather permitting, they will also get to spend time on the deck and have access to a shallow water pan to play in. They are given a myriad of toys to play with. They will also spend a few hours alone in a crate several times before shipping. This not only makes the big day at the airport just one more lesson, it helps the transition to the new home and that first night alone in a crate will not be their very first crate experience. The biggest problem with shipping is breeders that take the pup away from mom FIRST time at 8 weeks, thus creating a more traumatic experience by having too many things happen to the pup at once for the first time. We strive to avoid this and have the puppy ready to meet new challenges on a continuing basis to continue its development.

We prefer air shipment, as the pup is usually in their new home before we are back from taking it to the airport. The average time is less than 4 hours flying for pup. (Ground shipment used by some breeders can take all day or longer depending on distance or when more than one pup is involved.) In addition some transport services pick up pups from many places, greatly increasing the pup's chance of acquiring a disease from increased exposure. A person picking up their own pup and traveling with it can give their own pup all the personal attention it needs so don't be afraid to travel with your pup should you prefer to come yourself. Folks are always welcome to come to the farm and meet the gang personally.

Some folks are of the opinion that meeting a bunch of pups and selecting one in person is the only way to ensure a good match. Please remember that any living creature has good days and off days. You may not get a fair evaluation of the pups. The one sitting and watching but not bouncing around may be having an off day or 'thinking about his new world' while the one busy exploring his new world is the total lover but divided between learning and getting a loving that day. The one running in circles around you may be a calm pup but just feeling really good that day. Pups also mature at different rates just like people. The breeder has lived with these pups and is in a better position to evaluate and advise you about the pups. In addition to asking you what you want in a pup and the lifestyle a pup is going into, we do temperament testing at 5 and 6 1/2 weeks to get a better feel for the pups to help you choose the best pup for your family.
